The Korea Road Traffic Authority (KoROAD) was established in 1954 to reduce accident risk and hindrance of traffic on the highway by maintaining traffic order and enhancing traffic safety through education, PR, research and technological development. KoROAD has been systematically operated and managed. The organization is structured with headquarters in Seoul, 13 branches in other parts of the country, 7 local traffic broadcasting divisions and 26 driver's License Examination Offices.
KoROAD's major business functions consist of five departments. The traffic safety department is responsible for overall analysis of traffic accidents, technical support and services of traffic safety facilities, and operation of officially authorized inspections. The education and PR department specializes in driver's education such as specialized traffic safety education, traffic safety social training and promotion of traffic safety. The broadcasting department focuses on traffic improvement and contributes to accident prevention by providing the correct traffic information through the nationwide network. Finally, the R&D department conducts research for traffic-related policies, high-tech transportation management methods, etc.
The mission of the KoROAD is to generate an advanced road traffic culture through development of a safe road environment including inspiration of safety awareness and the quality and reliability of information transfer.
